Steel or timber, which is right for your extension?
3 April 2026 · Tom Davey
Clients often arrive with a preference already formed, usually steel, because it is the material most associated with structural work. In practice the right choice depends on span, loading, and how the finished ceiling needs to look. Timber can be a genuinely better answer on shorter spans where a warmer, lower carbon build up matters, while steel remains the more predictable choice for wide open plan spans or where fire performance is a driver. We design in both, and our job is to bring you the option that fits your project, not the one that is easiest to draw.
